“We are living in a time when a great work must be done. There is a famine in the land; people are hungering for the pure Gospel, and to such souls the bread of life must be given. In this case there is no better opportunity than to offer this work to consecrated canvassers. Thousands of books containing the precious light of present truth should be placed in the homes of those living in large cities” (Southern Watchman, November 20, 1902).

“Our papers are printed with blessed, soul-saving Bible truths. Many could help in selling our periodicals. The Lord calls upon all of us to strive to save the perishing. Satan is seeking to deceive even the elect, and now is the time for us to work while watching. Our books and papers must be brought before the attention of the people, and through them the gospel truth for this time should be proclaimed without delay in our cities. Shall we not take up our duty?” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 9, p. 63).

Health Literature

“Canvassers, you should call the attention of those you visit to our health publications, telling them about the valuable instruction found in these works, especially regarding the care of the sick and the treatment of various diseases. Tell them that by studying and applying these counsels, their families will be healthy. Direct their minds to Him who created and sustains life in such a wonderful structure as their body. Explain how important it is for every family to understand the ‘science’ of healthy living. Tell them that we must cooperate with God in caring for our mental powers and various organs.

Tell them that the books you offer will give many valuable instructions on the principles of health, and by applying them, they can avoid much suffering and save the means needed to pay doctors. Let them know that these books contain counsel that cannot be obtained from a doctor in the short time of his visit” (Southern Watchman, November 20, 1902).

“When young people take up canvassing work with a great desire to save their companions, they will see souls converted. This work will bring a rich harvest for the Lord’s garner. Let them work as missionaries, spreading the Glad Tidings and constantly praying for increased light and knowledge, so that they may be able to comfort all the weary in due season. Young people must use every opportunity to do works of mercy, remembering that by doing so they are carrying out the Lord’s commission… In their work, canvassers should always have with them several books on health, for health reform is the right hand of the Gospel” (Southern Watchman, January 15, 1903).

Treasure Every Page

“During the miracle of feeding the multitude with a few loaves and fishes, the food multiplied as it passed from the hands of Christ to those who received it. So it will be in the circulation of our literature. As it is passed on, God’s truth will be greatly multiplied. And as the disciples, at Christ’s direction, gathered up the fragments so that nothing would be lost, so we should treasure every leaflet that presents the truth for our time. It is difficult to estimate the influence that even one page containing the Three Angels’ Message may have on some readers who are seeking truth” (Southern Watchman, January 5, 1904).
