Remember Lot’s Wife

The Bible admonishes us to remember Lot’s wife (Luke 17:32). Unfortunately, she is not to be remembered for any good deed. Rather, it is a solemn warning, so that we do not stray off the narrow path and perish with the world. While the Spirit of Prophecy tells us that if Lot had not hesitated, his wife would have been saved, we see, nonetheless, that Sodom had greatly corrupted her and that this seed had born fruit.

Lesson #1 Corrupt surroundings stain the heart. We cannot choose to surround ourselves with sin and remain untainted.

Lesson #2 Heed the Lord’s call at once; keep your heart soft. Do not linger. To linger only hardens the heart and quiets the voice of the Spirit of God.

Led out by the hand of an angel, Lot’s wife rebelled against God’s warning and looked back:

When Lot was departing from Sodom, his wife looked back upon the city and perished; and after giving this caution our Savior admonishes us to ‘remember Lot’s wife.’ This shows that there will then be danger of our looking back upon this world, of our affections not being entirely weaned from it; and if they are not, we shall be left to perish like the wife of Lot.

She did not appreciate the mercy that God had shown her, and was left as an example of warning for future generations.

Lesson #3: Do not look back, not for anything in the world.

Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.” Luke 9:62

Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. 2 Cor. 6:2

The wife of Lot turned her eyes toward the city, [looking] for what she had left there; the curse of God came upon her, and she was turned into a pillar of salt…. We can see that Lot made a mistake when he made his home in Sodom. Here he lost not only all his possessions; he lost all but two of his children. This is a lesson that we should take to heart. There may be very flattering openings for the children of God, but they must look on every side of the question before deciding. The very first question with every one of us should be “How will it be with my soul?”

Lesson #4 Our first consideration in all life-matters is to be “how will it be with my soul?”.

Lot’s wife is noted in the Spirit of Prophecy as a “a selfish, irreligious woman.” It is our prayer that in remembering Lot’s wife, we could be to all around us a savour of life unto life!
