Perhaps every one of us has, at least once in our lives, thought about how to improve our financial situation quickly. Often, the most attractive option seems to be winning a large sum of money through luck. This thought can lead individuals toward gambling establishments. Under the influence of advertisements promising instant wealth, one might head into a world of phantom hopes.

The early stages of gaming can feel exciting, but over time, some may find they have spent more than they intended. This is where a behavioral dependency often referred to as “ludomania” or gambling addiction begins. The World Health Organization includes gambling disorder in its list of mental health conditions.

Initially, the fascination with gaming occurs consciously with the hope of winning. Later, the conscious desire may disappear, replaced by an irresistible urge to continue playing. Gradually, the person may lose their sense of time and priority, impacting family, reputation, and work. Significant distress and physical ailments can follow.

According to global statistics, pathological gambling affects a small but notable percentage of the population, and awareness of this condition has been recognized at the state level in various regions. Many people drawn into this addiction do not initially suspect they have a problem. Therefore, it is helpful to be aware of the diagnostic criteria used by professionals, such as those found in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV).

If four or more signs are present, an obsession with gambling is often classified as a clinical disorder:

  1. Preoccupation: Being frequently concerned with gambling (recalling past games or planning future bets).
  2. Tolerance: Needing to increase the stakes to achieve the desired excitement.
  3. Loss of Control: Experiencing difficulty when attempting to cut back or stop.
  4. Withdrawal: Feeling restless or irritable when attempting to limit gambling.
  5. Escape: Using gambling as a way to avoid problems or relieve a negative mood.
  6. Chasing: Attempting to win back losses shortly after losing.
  7. Lying: Deceiving others to hide the extent of involvement in gambling.
  8. Illegal Acts: Engaging in unlawful behavior to finance gambling activities.
  9. Risked Relationships: Jeopardizing significant relationships, jobs, or educational opportunities.
  10. Bailout: Relying on others to provide money to relieve desperate financial situations caused by gambling.

Gambling addiction causes significant anxiety within a family, disrupting harmony and trust. If these signs are noticed, it is important to address the situation immediately. Recovery is a challenging process that often requires several steps:

  • Self-Reflection: Honestly analyzing whether the “interest” in a game is dependent on the financial stake.
  • Acknowledgment: Admitting that the behavior has become a problem and that help is needed.
  • Professional Support: Seeking help from healthcare professionals or counselors rather than attempting to manage the condition alone.
  • Persistence: Maintaining a positive outlook and seeking spiritual or community support to regain a healthy lifestyle.

“He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city” (The Bible. Proverbs 16:32).
